Students: Enter Lamers Peace Prize Essay Contest & Win 1000 Eur

July 10th, 2020, is the deadline for MRU students to submit essays on Baltic States NATO membership to win the Dr. Karl. A. Lamers Peace Prize. The first place winner will receive a 1000 Eur prize. The runner-up will receive 600 Eur. A 3rd-place winner will be awarded 400 Eur. 

Dr. Lamers is a long-time member of the German Bundestag and the former President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. Dr. Lamers is also an honorary doctor and an honorary professor of MRU. Celebrating Dr. Lamers' commitment to security issues and work in the security area, the first Peace Prize Competition was launched last year.

This year, in the second Peace Prize contest, students must write an essay on the topic: In 2020, NATO is facing three major challenges: Great Power rivalry, international terrorism and humanitarian crises. Which priorities should the Alliance set from the perspective of the Baltic states? 

The contest began on February 10th, 2020, the day of the announcement of the competition. Deadline for submission is July 10th, 2020. 

All MRU students enrolled in Bachelor‘s and Master's study degree programs, also all Erasmus and international exchange students are qualified to take part.

On May 19, 2020, Dr. Lamers will be at MRU as a key-note speaker on global and regional security issues at the fifth annual "Dr. Lamers NATO Hearings." 

The Dr. Karl A. Lamers Peace-Foundation, founded in December 2018, seeks to encourage young people to think about the great importance of peace and freedom. The future of peace and freedom requires strong dedication and engagement from the younger generation. Both values have decisively shaped the life and work of Dr. Karl A. Lamers as a long-time politician. For decades, it has been important to him to strengthen the relations between Lithuania and Germany and to foster Lithuania’s integration into the Euro-Atlantic community. 

Please note: To submit your essay (max. 3,000 words) by emali, write: no later than 10 July 2020. Essays must be in English. 

Only one essay per participant allowed. Please provide your full name, contact details, semester and a copy of your Student ID. 

Selection: An Academic Selection Panel of MRU-Professors under the lead of Assoc. Prof. Virginijus Valentinavičius (Director/Dean, Institute of Communication) will select winning essays together with Prof. Dr. Sebastian Harnisch (Professor for International Relations and Foreign Policy, Heidelberg University) and Prof. h. c. Dr. Karl A. Lamers the three winning essays. 

Winner essays: The three winning essays will be awarded the Dr. Karl A. Lamers Peace-Prize (1,000€ for first prize, 600€ for second prize and 400€ for third prize) by Prof. Dr. Lamers, MRU Rector Prof. Žalėnienė and Assoc. Prof. Valentinavičius at the Official Ceremony at the beginning of the new academic year in September 2020 in Vilnius.
