Library Resources

The Sketch Engine software platform is designed for the analysis of text corpora (collections of texts) in various languages. This platform is used by researchers and students of linguistics and translation studies, terminology database developers, historians, and representatives of the social sciences who, by using linguistic material, study social attitudes, values, and their changes over time.

The platform’s repository contains about 800 corpora in more than 100 languages, and they are continuously updated. These corpora make it possible to study and compare language use from many different perspectives:

  • the characteristics of language in various fields of knowledge (such as law, economics, education, etc.);
  • different genres (legislative texts, academic writing, professional literature, media, social media, etc.);
  • texts written by various groups of authors (classified by geographic origin, gender, age, and other factors).

It also enables diachronic analysis, which allows researchers to compare language change over time from a historical perspective. The wide range of languages represented in the corpora makes multilingual analysis possible, allowing the comparison of data from different languages and the identification of prevailing linguistic trends. Parallel multilingual corpora (collections of original texts and their translations) make it possible to analyze translation methods. The software also allows students and researchers to create their own corpora using Sketch Engine’s automatic text search tool on the internet or by uploading their own selected texts.

The Sketch Engine platform includes various tools Concordance, Word Sketch, Wordlist, N-grams that allows users to sort, filter, and visualize the obtained results in multiple ways. These tools make it possible to perform detailed text analysis.

To log in to the platform, go to the Sketch Engine website, select Login → Institutional Login, find Mykolas Romeris University, create an account, and log in using your MRU username and password.

We wish you exciting linguistic discoveries.
