Universities evolve alongside society. Today, Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) is taking a strategically important step – redefining its physical spaces and investing where real value is created for students. After decommissioning and selling the long-unused Valakupiai building complex, the University has shifted its focus to its campuses in Vilnius, Kaunas, and Marijampolė – the places where MRU’s present and future are being built.

The funds generated – more than €12 million – are being allocated to the investment project “A Sustainable Environment for the Community: Renovation and Modernisation of Mykolas Romeris University’s Real Estate.” Over the next two to three years, MRU plans to modernise the Central Building in Vilnius (Ateities St. 20) and the Public Security Academy in Kaunas (Maironio St. 27). Meanwhile, in the centre of Marijampolė, the complete renovation of the Sūduva Academy building is already underway – a separate, yet strategically aligned, project aimed at creating a modern, accessible, and vibrant study space for the entire region.

The modernisation will go beyond façades, encompassing the entire study infrastructure. State-of-the-art, energy-efficient heating and ventilation systems will be installed, with part of the energy sourced from renewable resources such as solar power. Renovated auditoriums and laboratories will be adapted for hybrid learning, smart technology integration, teamwork, creativity, and independent study. Modern libraries, archives, and document digitisation facilities will provide greater access to information resources while ensuring innovative and secure knowledge preservation.

The University will also introduce digital content creation labs, start-up hubs, and creative workshops, enabling students and researchers to develop their ideas, while fostering collaboration with businesses and investors to drive social innovation. Canteens and kitchenette areas will be upgraded to ensure comfortable everyday amenities for the community.

Sport will also receive significant attention – the sports complex and gym will be renovated, and new wrestling and self-defence halls, an outdoor obstacle course, and multipurpose outdoor sports fields will be built. These facilities will enhance professional competencies in public security as well as promote healthy, active lifestyles. All spaces will be fully accessible to individuals with special needs – for study, leisure, and sport alike.

The University’s academic and administrative infrastructure will be upgraded to meet the needs of modern collaborative teaching, with comfortable, aesthetic, and functional spaces, smart technologies, and environmentally friendly solutions becoming part of everyday life. Student residences will also be modernised, ensuring quality living conditions for those coming from across Lithuania and abroad. A children’s and youth day centre will be established to help balance studies, work, and family commitments.

MRU is placing special emphasis on a green environment – all infrastructure will be developed or renewed in line with sustainable development, universal design, and smart building principles. Green spaces, ecological solutions, and an attractive environment will contribute to the well-being of a sustainable academic community.

This will be more than just physical changes – it is a deliberate effort to create a university where infrastructure serves the quality of studies, the well-being of the community, and social responsibility. An environment rooted in contemporary values will not only meet students’ expectations but also help nurture responsible societal leaders.

These changes are no coincidence – they are part of the University’s strategic development. According to MRU Rector Prof. Dr. Inga Žalėnienė, the institution is undergoing targeted structural changes with the aim of ensuring the highest quality of studies and research, and fostering community well-being across all its academic spaces in Vilnius, Kaunas, and Marijampolė.

“Our priority is to create the best possible conditions for studies and research for the younger generation. Investments in infrastructure allow not only our physical spaces to grow, but also our entire community – ensuring a sustainable, modern university experience that meets contemporary expectations,” says the Rector.

Mykolas Romeris University aims to be more than just a place of study – it is a space where ideas are born, initiatives are developed, partnerships are forged, and growth happens in step with the world. Across Vilnius, Kaunas, and Marijampolė, a unique academic ecosystem is taking shape, opening opportunities to create, explore, and grow for everyone who chooses an education that meets not only today’s needs but also the demands of tomorrow.
