Graduates of the Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) Law School were recognised at the Best Master’s Theses in Law Competition held at the Supreme Court of Lithuania – Gabija Vaičiūnaitė won first place, while Paulina Lastauskienė took third place.
This year, three Lithuanian universities submitted 14 Master’s theses to the competition, five of which were prepared by MRU graduates. The theses were evaluated by a commission consisting of university representatives, judges and staff members of Supreme Court of Lithuania.
First-place winner Gabija Vaičiūnaitė is a graduate of the Master’s programme in Criminal Law and Criminology at the MRU Law School. She received the highest evaluation for her Master’s thesis, “Criminal Offences of Domestic Violence: Specific Features of Pre-Trial Investigation and Criminal Proceedings” („Smurto artimojoje aplinkoje nusikalstamos veikos: ikiteisminio tyrimo ir baudžiamųjų bylų nagrinėjimo ypatumai“). The thesis was supervised by Prof. Dr Rima Ažubalytė of the Institute of Criminal Law and Procedure at the MRU Law School.
Third place was awarded to Paulina Lastauskienė, a graduate of the Master’s programme in Civil and Business Law at the MRU Law School. She was recognised for her Master’s thesis, “Civil Liability of the State for Unlawful Actions of the Court” („Valstybės civilinė atsakomybė už neteisėtus teismo veiksmus“). The thesis was supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr Remigijus Jokubauskas of the Institute of Private Law at the MRU Law School.
Three other Master’s theses by MRU graduates were also selected for the competition: Aistė Stankūnaitė’s “Judicial Cooperation in Gathering Evidence in Criminal Proceedings” („Teisminis bendradarbiavimas renkant įrodymus baudžiamajame procese“), supervised by Prof. Dr Raimundas Jurka; Ramida Vėliūtė’s “Application of Civil Liability in Cases of Contract Invalidity” („Civilinės atsakomybės taikymas sutarčių negaliojimo atveju“), supervised by Prof. Dr Vaidas Jurkevičius; and Olena Leshchenko’s “The Development and Confirmation of the Restructuring Plan of Legal Entities: Impact of EU Law and Problematic Aspects”, supervised by Prof. Dr Salvija Mulevičienė.
The Best Master’s Theses in Law Competition has been held at the Supreme Court of Lithuania since 2016. It brings together young legal professionals, members of the academic community and legal practitioners, providing an opportunity to showcase relevant research by emerging legal professionals.
