MRU and STT sign cooperation agreement: Strengthening the fight against corruption in education and scientific research

Vilnius, 25 August 2025 – Today, Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) and the Special Investigation Service of the Republic of Lithuania (STT) signed a cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening anti-corruption education, promoting scientific research and improving students' practical engagement in the field of corruption prevention.

The agreement was signed by the Rector of MRU, Prof. Dr. Inga Žalėnienė, and the Director of STT, Linas Pernavas.

"A university is a place where values are shaped, responsible civic behaviour is promoted and analytical and independent thinking is encouraged. In a small country like Lithuania, higher education is particularly important because it enables us to educate critically thinking people who do not tolerate corruption and other misconduct. We want to become a university with a culture of zero tolerance for corruption. By working with the STT, we can further strengthen the environment for fighting corruption and provide students with real knowledge and real experiences," said the rector of MRU, Prof. Dr. Inga Žalėnienė.

The rector also highlighted the STT's contribution to the development of the bachelor's degree programme in national security, together with other law enforcement agencies. In her opinion, this is an important example of how close cooperation between law enforcement agencies and the academic community can contribute to the state's resilience to corruption and threats to national security.

STT Director Linas Pernavas emphasised that the contribution of universities in the field of corruption prevention is crucial. He highlighted that student participation in anti-corruption initiatives, scientific research and practical training is an investment in public trust in state institutions and a transparent future.

Under the agreement, MRU and STT will conduct joint scientific research and projects, organise conferences, seminars and internships in Lithuania and abroad, implement anti-corruption initiatives and exchange expertise. The agreement also provides opportunities for students to undertake internships at the STT, and for faculty members and civil servants to improve their qualifications and participate in joint academic activities.

This agreement is not only important for the academic community – it will also help to educate an honest and civically responsible younger generation, strengthen public trust in institutions, and improve the state's resilience to corruption and threats to national security.
