On October 9, at Mykolas Romeris University (MRU), the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark, together with MRU, held an exhibition opening event that invited participants to explore the connections between sustainability, democracy, and community in contemporary cities.

Following the welcoming remarks by MRU Rector Prof. Dr. Inga Žalėnienė and Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark in Lithuania, Magnus Hjortdal, attendees were invited to a discussion on sustainability at the university and the role of higher education institutions in promoting responsible and environmentally friendly behavior. “In the face of today’s geopolitical challenges, knowledge and mutual trust are crucial for ensuring a shared future in a safe, united, and green Europe,” emphasized MRU Rector Prof. Dr. Inga Žalėnienė.

In his speech, Deputy Head of Mission Magnus Hjortdal highlighted the role of young people in creating a more sustainable future, noting that it is today’s youth who will need to take responsibility for society and make important decisions for our future. The diplomat also stressed the urgency of action: “We must preserve our world and ensure that climate change does not reach a stage where we can no longer do anything about it.”

After the discussion, guests were invited to explore two exhibitions – “Together for a Greener Future” and “Defending Democratic Values” – showcasing the experiences of Danish cities in creating sustainable and inclusive urban spaces.

The exhibitions, spread across three MRU locations, encourage visitors to immerse themselves in modern urban planning ideas. Attendees could closely explore advanced environmental solutions and, using virtual reality glasses, travel through the streets of Copenhagen. “We greatly value the noble mission of the Danish Cultural Institute – to expand the boundaries of knowledge, open up cultural and artistic treasures, and strengthen mutual understanding and trust between our peoples,” said Prof. Dr. Inga Žalėnienė.

The event provided an excellent platform for dialogue, inspiration, and a shared commitment to creating a greener and more democratic future together.

The event was held as part of  Danish Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2025 cultural programme
