Does law exist only on paper, or only when it is embraced by society? This is the central question of the ERUA Intensive Course “The Faces of Justice. Why Does Law Work Only When It Is Recognized?”, taking place 27–30 October 2025 at SWPS University in Warsaw (Poland).

The course invites students to explore law as a social reality shaped by people, values, history, and practice. Participants will examine topics such as constitutionalism, historical memory, morality, economic relations, and legitimacy in liberal-democratic contexts.

Core idea: Drawing on Eugen Ehrlich’s concept of “living law,” the course emphasizes that law’s power derives not only from written rules but also from social recognition.
