On 16 October, Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) hosted the National Dinner, organised by the International Relations Office for exchange and degree-seeking students. The evening allowed guests not only to see Lithuanian culture, but to experience it first-hand.
Lithuanian Culture Up Close
Participants were introduced to Lithuanian proverbs, which concisely reflect what matters to the nation: diligence, wisdom and community spirit. Learning a proverb means understanding not only the words, but also their meaning and outlook.
Students tasted traditional Lithuanian dishes. Food is one of the best ways to get to know another culture, because behind every dish lie customs, celebrations and family stories. “Everything was incredibly delicious,” said Darina Potabenko, a student from Ukraine. Conversations between students from different countries naturally began around the shared table.
Participants learned folk dances and listened to traditional Lithuanian music. Dance steps cannot be learned by watching alone, so everyone stood up and danced together. Shyness disappeared, and mistakes only brightened the atmosphere. “What stayed with me most were the dances. There is something especially powerful in them that brings people together,” Darina shared.
The evening’s programme was complemented by games that helped break the ice and made communication easier. We hope this evening became not only a new experience for the participants, but also the beginning of new friendships.
The Evening Through the Participants’ Eyes
“I was truly delighted to have the chance to take part in this evening. It was a wonderful and memorable event. I met people from various countries and came to appreciate Lithuanian traditions even more,” – Darina Potabenko, student from Ukraine.
“I really had a lot of fun, especially with the playful Lithuanian songs and the traditional dances. I made many new friends and took home wonderful memories. I will be looking forward to similar events,” – Zozan Yavuzaslan, Erasmus exchange student.
We sincerely thank everyone who helped organise the event, and the participants whose good mood helped create a cosy atmosphere full of culture and togetherness!
