Project Objective: To develop an analytical model that allows for an understanding of how “memory laws” function in practice and to assess their effectiveness, as well as to determine how legal norms reflect or fail to reflect the actual situation in society and their potential shortcomings.
Project Summary: The project examines so-called “memory laws” in the European Union, particularly those related to the prohibition of Holocaust denial. It aims to systematically analyze the differences in these laws across EU member states and assess their impact on society. The research will include an analysis of legal norms, surveys, and an in-depth analysis of several countries—Germany, Lithuania, Poland, and Portugal.
The project is funded by the Volkswagen Stiftung.
