The Public Security Academy of Mykolas Romeris University (MRU), together with the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania, hosted the annual international Forum on Sustainable Security “SustainSecure”. This is the main event of the Academy, bringing together scholars, researchers, and experts from across Europe to discuss contemporary security challenges and possible solutions.
During the opening of the event, MRU Vice-Rector Assoc. Prof. Dr. Saulius Spurga, who delivered the welcome speech, emphasized the importance of international cooperation and coordinated responses in the face of contemporary threats:
“External and internal threats form a spectrum that requires competent and coordinated responses, an interagency mindset, and an open dialogue about the challenges faced by our state and broader Western institutions.”
Academic tradition and international dimension
The forum is part of a long-standing academic tradition, with similar events organized for more than two decades. It also coincided with the International Teaching Week, during which MRU welcomed lecturers and experts from foreign higher education institutions, further strengthening international academic cooperation.
Discussion topics
This year’s forum focused on the concept of sustainable security, emphasizing that the security and resilience of states depend not only on strategic decisions, but also on social, economic, and other complex factors. Discussions covered security policy, social risks, societal resilience, and international cooperation, while presented research offered a broad perspective on current challenges.
An important part of the forum was student involvement – students presented their research and participated in academic discussions alongside experienced scholars. This further strengthened the forum’s role as an open and collaboration-driven academic platform, contributing to the development of new ideas and perspectives in the context of European security.
