SustainSecure – Forum on Sustainable Security

In explaining what a grand strategy in his 2009 „Next 100 years“ book, George Friedman offered Lithuania as an iliustration: “All nations have grand strategies, though this does not mean all nation can achieve their strategic goals. Lithuania’s goal is to be free of foreign occupation. But its economy, demography, and geography make it unlikely that Lithuania will ever achieve its goal more than occasionally and temporarily.” Indeed, the membership of the Baltic States in NATO and EU is a historically unlikely achievement. Small and open economies in an exposed geography are a litmus test for the ability of EU to maintain the economic, welfare and security achievements of the long peace in Europe. In the age of rising great power rivalry Friedman’s argument is as relevant as ever, and this forum is committed to bringing researchers that think hard on what actions could allow EU and democracies in its periphery to work together to maintain and enhance European security.

The forum has emerged from academic events organized annually since 2003. It is co-organized by Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) Public Security Academy and General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy on behalf of Sustainable security network which unites researchers from across Europe.
