A Global Platform for Sustainable Solutions

Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) was prominently represented at the EULiST Global Conference “Co-creating Sustainable Solutions for Climate-Resilient Societies”, held on 20–21 November 2025 in Madrid, Spain. Bringing together leading academics, researchers, and industry representatives, the conference provided a vibrant platform for discussing innovative pathways toward climate resilience, energy transition, industry transformation, and the societal impacts of rapid technological change.

MRU Researcher at the Forefront of Sustainability Education

Among the distinguished speakers was Prof. Dr. Paulo Alexander da Silva Pereira, MRU researcher and head of the Environmental Management Research Laboratory. He delivered a plenary lecture within the thematic area “Novel Educational Approaches for Sustainable Solutions.” His session explored the pivotal role of education in strengthening sustainability practices and societal transformation.

The Role of Higher Education in Driving Sustainability

Early in his address, Prof. Dr. P. Pereira emphasized the responsibility of academic institutions in shaping future-oriented thinking:

“Higher education institutions need to be at the forefront of Sustainability implementation. They are key to creating the next generation of critical thinkers who shape the world, looking at it in a balanced way and integrating environmental, societal, and economic interests equally.”

This message strongly reflected the overarching mission of the EULiST conference, which seeks to foster dialogue and cooperation across disciplines to address global challenges through integrated and innovative solutions.

Later in his presentation, Prof. Dr. P. Pereira expanded on the difficulties and opportunities created by recent global crises:

“This is not easy to implement; nevertheless, challenges are what make us grow as a society, and the crises we have faced should make us stronger. Recent (COVID-19) and current crises (e.g., geopolitical context, war, migration) pose even greater challenges for higher institutions in establishing sustainability principles, given the polarised nature of society. In any case, higher institutions should establish themselves as societal transformative agents, promote sustainable principles, and cultivate critical thinkers who are concerned with a more prosperous and equitable world. This is the way to go.”

Strengthening MRU’s International Presence

Prof. Dr. Paulo Pereira’s contribution underscored the essential role that science, education, and research laboratories – such as the Environmental Management Research Laboratory he leads – play in addressing pressing global issues. His insights reinforced MRU’s commitment to advancing sustainability, innovation, and the cultivation of socially responsible leaders.

Looking Ahead

As the world continues to face interconnected challenges, the leadership of higher education institutions remains indispensable. Prof. P. Pereira’s message in Madrid serves as a powerful reminder that sustainable progress begins with informed minds, strong research foundations, and empowered communities.
