On October 6, Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) will host a public lecture by Dr. Toni Fickentscher titled “Constitutional protection for the future generations, state and society.”
Why It Matters
In principle, constitutions are designed to remain in force indefinitely and retain their validity throughout their existence. In this role, a constitution carries responsibility not only for the present but also for the future. It must guarantee that the rightful interests of coming generations are considered in today’s decisions and policies.
Taking this into consideration, the lecture will address the question of the extent to which a constitution deals with issues that are likely to affect future generations in particular. This includes not only climate change but also topics such as intergenerational justice in social security, budget stability, and other areas of sustainable governance. Current discussions and the increase in court proceedings on these issues show that the debate has moved beyond the political dimension and is increasingly based on legal, especially constitutional, reasoning. The lecture aims to provide clarification based on the fundamental principles of a constitution.
