Inspiring academic discussions at international workshop at MRU

On 17 September 2025, at an international scientific workshop Corporate Governance Transformation in Light of Recent Sustainability Legislation, hosted by Mykolas Romeris University, early-career and senior researchers from Germany, Estonia, and Lithuania explored how recent legal developments – such as the German Supply Chain Act, the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive – are transforming corporate governance.

Participants from Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, University of Tartu, and Mykolas Romeris University had inspiring discussions examining the topic of sustainable corporate governance from different perspectives.

Anne-Christin Mittwoch, Andres Vutt, Giedrė Čiuladienė, Kateryna Varava, Lina Mikaloniene, Lyra Jakuleviciene, Paweł Mazur, Tomas Stundys, Tonio Friedmann, Virginijus Bitė discussed legal frameworks driving sustainability in corporate governance, tensions between sustainability and competitiveness, implications for start-up governance, and evolving roles of corporate shareholders and directors.

Contributions from the German colleagues Anne-Christin Mittwoch and Tonio Friedmann on the German Supply Chain Act and the experience and challenges in applying it over two years sparked lively discussions on a balanced approach to integrating sustainability into corporate law and the anticipated impact, as well as the ongoing legislative initiatives and developments in the field of sustainable corporate governance. 

Jolanta Apolewicz, Vice-Dean for International Relations at the Faculty of Law, emphasized that MRU, which is committed fostering sustainability in its activities, is delighted to host an international scientific workshop on sustainability issues at our university.

Ms Ieva Pranka, an Executive Directors of the Baltic-German University Liaison Office, welcomed early-career and senior researchers from the three universities participating in the workshop under  the project of the Baltic-German University Liaison Office being supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds from the Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of  Germany, and wished strengthening the academic collaboration.

The workshop's organizing committee consists of doctoral students Kateryna Varava and Giedrė Čiuladienė, chaired by prof. dr. Lina Mikalonienė.
