New Opportunities in Central Asia for MRU Students
University

From September 10–12, Mykolas Romeris University (MRU) Rector Prof. Dr. Inga Žalėnienė and the School of Law Vice-Dean for International Relations and International Studies Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jolanta Apolewicz visited Narxoz University in Almaty (Kazakhstan).

During the opening of the new building of Narxoz University’s Business School, MRU representatives together with their partners discussed new avenues of cooperation, opening up broader opportunities for students and researchers in Central Asia.

During the visit, the Rector also paid a visit to the Consulate General of the Republic of Lithuania in Almaty, where she met with Consul General Šarūnė Kubiliūtė. The meeting focused on strengthening academic ties between Lithuania and Kazakhstan and on fostering collaboration between MRU and Narxoz University. According to the MRU Rector, this collaboration serves as a bridge linking our academic communities, and nurturing future generations of leaders who understand not only business logic but also the values of cooperation, mutual respect, and deep cultural understanding.

A key highlight of the visit was the meetings with the leadership of Narxoz University, the International Relations Office, and representatives of the School of Law and Public Policy. In October 2022, Mykolas Romeris University and Narxoz University signed a cooperation agreement for the implementation of a joint Bachelor’s program in Law and Global Security. During this visit, an annex to the agreement was signed, setting out new stages for the program’s implementation, further strengthening international cooperation and expanding academic opportunities for students.

“The renewed agreement is a significant step in strengthening the academic partnership between MRU and Narxoz University. MRU is strategically investing in international double-degree programs, as they provide our students with unique experiences and a competitive advantage in the global field of law and security. This reflects our ambition to become a leading university in the region, capable of shaping the future directions of studies and research,” emphasized Prof. Dr. Inga Žalėnienė.

The partnership between MRU and Narxoz University opens new perspectives for both MRU students and the academic community, while reinforcing the university’s mission to actively participate in international academic exchange.

On average, MRU hosts 10–20 or more exchange students from Kazakhstan each year, coming through bilateral agreements, Erasmus+ international credit mobility, or State Scholarship programs. In the 2025/2026 academic year, five degree-seeking students from Kazakhstan have been admitted to MRU’s Bachelor’s studies.
