Visit of the Japanese Ambassador to MRU: Focus on Academic and Cultural Ties

On May 21, the Japanese Ambassador to Lithuania, H.E. Shinsuke Shimizu, visited Mykolas Romeris University (MRU). During the visit, the ambassador was received by the university’s Rector, Prof. Dr. Inga Žalėnienė. Representatives from the Japanese Embassy and the university also took part in the meeting.

The visit reaffirmed the strong academic and cultural ties between MRU and Japan. The university collaborates with nine Japanese universities, and student exchange programs are attracting more and more young people each year. In the 2024/2025 academic year alone, MRU welcomed 27 students from Japan.

Since its establishment in 2013, the MRU Asia Centre has actively contributed to the promotion of Japanese culture. The university offers Japanese language classes and organizes cultural events. Since 2017, MRU has been implementing a unique project funded by the One Asia Foundation focused on Asian culture and new media. As part of this initiative, a course titled “Asian Community: Culture and New Media” is taught by lecturers from Japan, the USA, and Europe.

The ambassador’s visit serves as a symbolic yet important sign of the deepening mutual trust between the academic communities of Lithuania and Japan, opening up new opportunities for cooperation in the fields of education, culture, and innovation.
