Explainable AI-Enabled Operational Digital Twin Architechture for Reliability-Aware Infrastructure Performance Assurance in Lithuanian Public Buildings (RELIANT), No. S-ITP-26-16

Project No.: S-ITP-26-16

Project value: 271,350 EUR

Project duration: September 1, 2026 – August 31, 2028

Project implementer: Mykolas Romeris University

Project Leader: Dr. Ahsan Waqar

Project summary: Modern public buildings in Lithuania are becoming increasingly dependent on digital management systems, sensor data, and automated infrastructure maintenance. However, building operations are currently based primarily on reactive troubleshooting, and existing artificial intelligence methods are difficult to interpret and do not allow for a reliable assessment of system status and risk. This results in energy losses, unplanned equipment failures, and higher operating costs, while reducing the reliability of services.

The goal of the project is to develop an explainable artificial intelligence-based operational digital twin architecture designed to assess and ensure the reliability of public building infrastructure operations. The research will develop methods for anomaly detection, uncertainty assessment, and explainability of decisions, enabling the analysis of even limited or irregular operational data. Decision-support tools will be developed for infrastructure managers, enabling them to identify the risk of failures early on and optimize maintenance processes.

The project’s results will contribute to more reliable operation of public buildings, more efficient energy use, and better delivery of public services. It will also strengthen expertise in artificial intelligence and cyber resilience in Lithuania, promote collaboration between the scientific community and the public sector, and create conditions for the implementation of new digital infrastructure management solutions.

The project is funded from the state budget and is being implemented under the Lithuanian Science Council’s “Information Technologies for the Development of Science and the Knowledge Society” program.
