Project Description: The project aims to fundamentally modernize ELEXIS, the European lexicographic infrastructure—a common European digital system designed for the creation, storage, and use of dictionaries and other language resources. This infrastructure will be redesigned using the latest advances in artificial intelligence, particularly large language models (LLMs) and the new possibilities they open up in the field of language technology.
One of the project’s key objectives is to present lexicographic knowledge in a form that computers can understand and process, and to integrate it into artificial intelligence systems. This will enable the development of more accurate and advanced multilingual artificial intelligence technologies, and the results of these technologies will, in turn, help to further improve dictionaries and other language resources.
To evaluate the effectiveness of these solutions, an evaluation methodology will be developed and applied to ensure the reliability and consistency of the results produced by artificial intelligence systems. In this way, the project will contribute to the development and improvement of technologies based on natural language processing.
The new virtual lexicographic infrastructure will be developed by an international consortium bringing together experts in lexicography, computational linguistics, and artificial intelligence from 26 institutions in 23 European countries. The long-term sustainability of the infrastructure will be ensured through collaboration with two European research infrastructures—CLARIN and DARIAH—as well as with ALT-EDIC, a new pan-European initiative dedicated to the development of open, multilingual language models.
The project is funded by the European Union’s “Horizon Europe” program.
