Be the Environment Research Laboratory of reference in Lithuania and recognized internationally. The Environmental Management Group intends to develop and disseminate academic and scientific information to civil society. Represent an opportunity for students, researchers and University become more visible in the international arena.

Head of the laboratory

Prof. Dr. Paulo Pereira

Geographer, Full professor at Mykolas Romeris University (Lithuania) and invited full professor at Beijing Normal University (China) is a recognized researcher in Land Degradation, Fire effects on the Ecosystems and Ecosystem Services and Nature-Based Solutions. He published more than 460 publications in books, peer-reviewed articles and conferences. Paulo received several international prizes (e.g., “European Geosciences Union Soil System Sciences Division Outstanding Young Scientist Award”). In 2020 was identified as one of the world’s most cited researchers (Clarivate Analytics Highly Cited ResearcherIn 2021 was elected as a full member of the world’s most prestigious scientific research honour society Sigma Xi and recognized as one of the top (1%) researchers writing about soil in the past ten years (2011-2021) according to “Expertscape”.”. In 2022 Paulo was listed as amongst the world’s 2% top scientists according to Elsevier/Stanford University in the field of environmental sciences. He is an associated editor of the Science of the Total Environment, Geography and Sustainability and Heliyon.

 

Members of the laboratory

Miguel Inacio

Postdoctoral Researcher at the Environmental Management Laboratory of Mykolas Romeris University. He has a BSc. in Marine Biology (2012), MSc. In Marine Biodiversity and Conservation (2014) and a PhD in Ecology and Environmental Sciences (2019). His research and expertise focus on the assessment and mapping of ecosystem services at different temporal and spatial scales (local, regional and national) for terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems. Complimentary, his research addresses aspects of spatial management and planning (terrestrial and marine), using Remote Sensing and Spatial analysis in various GIS environments (ArcGIS, QGIS) and platforms (e.g., Google Earth Engine). He is author and co-author of more than 26 articles (19 ISI), most in published within the first quartile, and with more than 300 citations. He is also author and co-author of 3 book chapters. He has conducted his doctoral research (2015-2019) at the Leibniz-Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemuende (Germany). He has ~ 32 communications at national and international conferences. He has participated in 6 national and international projects from different funding sources (BONUS, ERASMUS+, LMT, BMBF, EU Horizons Programme). He is reviewer for different journals (Science of the Total Environment, Data in Brief, Geography and Sustainability, Ecosystem Services). He is part of the Young Ecosystem Services Specialists, integrating the Training Team.

Marius Kalinauskas

Dr. Marius Kalinauskas is an associate professor at Mykolas Romeris university who specializes in ecosystem services research and gamified design. Marius has a master’s degree in law and PhD in educational sciences. Dr. Kalinauskas professionally operates digital content creation tools (static and motion graphics, video editing, data visualization) and GIS packages (ArcGIS, QGIS). He also works with website content management tools and creates popular science outputs. Marius published more than 30 scientific papers and gave over 20 presentations at international scientific conferences. Researcher has participated in 7 national and international scientific projects.

Katažyna Bogdzevič

Katažyna Bogdzevič is a professor at Mykolas Romeris University. She specializes in private international law, European law, human rights and environmental law. Katažyna is the head of the Human Rights Laboratory at Mykolas University. From 2020 she serves as an advisor to the Lithuanian Minister of Justice.

 

 

 

Dr. Eglė Baltranaitė

Dr. Eglė Baltranaitė is a researcher at Mykolas Romeris University with expertise in stakeholder engagement and tourism management. Eglė holds a PhD in Physical Geography and an MSc in Recreation and Tourism Management. Dr. Baltranaitė’s field of expertise and study lies in the interdisciplinary field of coastal zone management, with a focus on sustainable planning as well as the influence of anthropogenic and physical geographical factors on coastal areas. She also is an academic adviser of a PhD candidate at Klaipėda University. Eglė presented at 8 international scientific conferences and published 11 scientific articles. The researcher has participated in more than 20 national and international projects, including 4 scientific (funded by BONUS, EU HORIZON, Baltic Research, and Interreg programmes).

 

 

PhD students

Luis Pinto

Luís has a degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Aveiro (PT), and a MSc in Project of the Urban Environment, by the Faculties of Architecture and Engineering from the University of Porto (PT). Currently working on his PhD, focused on human interactions with urban green spaces and their implications for well-being. Linked to the Research Centre for Natural Resources, Environment and Society (CERNAS), Coimbra Polytechnic School (PT), and to the Environmental Management Center, at the Mykolas Romeris University, in Vilnius (LT), where he is a PhD candidate. Current research interests are related to Environmental Services, Urban Green and Blue Infrastructures (U-GBI), Urban Green Spaces (UGS) user preferences, accessibility to UGS and Science Communication.

Mario Menjibar

Mario Menjíbar Romero studied a degree in Geography and Territorial Planning at the University of Malaga, and subsequently completed two Master’s degrees: (i) Master in Territorial Planning. Instruments and Intervention Techniques, specialising in the Environmental Impact of Urban Planning at the University of Seville and (ii) Master’s Degree in Secondary Education, Vocational Training and Language Teaching (Specialising in Social Sciences: Geography and History and Philosophy) at the University of Malaga. After working in private companies and public bodies, he started his research career at the Institute of Geomorphology and Soils of the Department of Geography of the University of Malaga, where he works as a researcher in the EcoGeography of Gullies Landscapes in Protected Natural Areas of Andalusia: Implications for their Management and Enhancement (EGEOLAND) Project, part of the R&D Projects Challenges of Andalusian Society: Climate Action, Environment, Resource Efficiency and Raw Materials.

Through this project, Mario has presented several papers at national and international conferences (AGE and IAG). He is currently a PhD student in City, Territory and Sustainability Planning: Climate Change.

Ivan Dugan

Ivan is currently working as an assistant at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture. He is also working on his Ph.D. thesis as a part of project of Soil erosion and degradation in Croatia (SEDCRO) under mentorship of Associate professor Igor Bogunovic and Professor Paulo Pereira. His research work is focused on ecosystem services, soil management and diffuse pollution in intensive agricultural areas. He has presented several papers on the national and international conferences.

External colaborators

Eduardo Gomes

Eduardo Gomes holds a Ph.D. in Geography from Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and the University of Lisbon. Currently, he is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (University of Lisbon). His latest research work is focused on the design of modelling and collaborative simulations employed to analyse land use/ cover changes. Eduardo Gomes received recognized awards, such as the Portuguese National Geography Award (2020) (Orlando Ribeiro) for the best Ph.D. thesis; Best Scientific Article Award in Human Geography (2020); and the jury award for the best agent-based model at the MAPS8 workshop that took place in Nice (France). He is an Editor and a reviewer of several scientific journals. After he concluded his Ph.D. in 2019, Eduardo Gomes worked (i) as a GIS specialist in the Climate change adaptation plan of the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon; (ii) as an Invited Assistant at the University of Lisbon, and at the Higher Institute of Education and Sciences; (iii) as a researcher in the LINESAM project at Mykolas Romeris University (Environmental Management Laboratory) (Lithuania); and (iv) as a researcher at the Centre for Geographical Studies (University of Lisbon).

Marcos Francos

Geographer, Assistant professor at University of Salamanca (Spain) is a researcher focused in Fire effect on soils and vegetation, land use and environmental degradation. He published more than 50 publications in books, book chapters and peer-reviewed articles. Marcos has recieved recognition for the best thesis defended in its PhD programme in 2019 and the award for the best soil thesis in Spain by the Spanish Society of Soil Science. He is associated editor of Agronomy Research and currently Secretary of FuegoRED (International Thematic Network on the Effects of Fire on Forest Ecosystems).

 

Yuliana Shuhani

Yuliana Shuhani is a Tourism Management and Heritage student at Mykolas Romeris University, currently working in Environmental Management laboratory. She also has a Specialist degree in English Philology and Literature acquired at Chernivtsi National University, Ukraine.  Yuliana works in multiple international projects and is involved in sustainability initiatives at Mykolas Romeris University.

 

 

Manab Das

Geographer, Ph.D. research scholar at the Department of Geography, University of Gour Banga, India. His research work focuses on Remote Sensing, Geo-informatics (GIS), ecosystem services, landscape ecology and management, urban climatology, green infrastructure, regional planning and development. He published more than 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters. He has presented many papers at the national and international levels. He works as a reviewer for several prestigious journals (Urban Climate, Science of The Total Environment, Land use policy, Geography and sustainability, Building and Environment, Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety, Sustainable Cities and Society, Environmental Science and Pollution Research, Frontiers in Environmental Science, Frontiers in Forests and Global Change. Currently, his research work focuses on ‘urban ecology and well-being’.

 

Visiting Scholars

Jesús Aguilera Huertas

Jesús Aguilera Huertas has a degree in Environmental Sciences and a Master’s degree in Environmental Management and Biodiversity from the University of Córdoba. At the same time, during his undergraduate and master courses he has been an internal student and honorary collaborator in the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Soil Science and Microbiology, carrying out the research work that the position entails. He is currently working on his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Professor Lozano-García and Professor Parras-Alcántara. She is part of the SUMAS research group (PAIDI-RNM-922) within which she has started her research career as a research assistant in the H2020-Diverfarming project (728003). She has 10 publications in high impact scientific journals and has contributed to 3 international conferences and 5 national conferences. Regarding his interests, objectives and lines of research in the short and medium term are: the study of the influence of soil on ecosystem services; the analysis of organic matter, carbon and nitrogen in soil, soil degradation processes due to changes in use and unsustainable management practices, the study of the physico-chemical properties of soils in agricultural systems and the analysis of soil quality and health as a function of use and management and the influence of vegetation covers on soil properties.

Lauriane Meusnier

Lauriane is a bachelor student at the University of La Rochelle, specializing in life sciences with a focus on continental systems biology. She is currently undertaking an internship in Vilnius, where she is investigating the impact of nature-based solutions on ecosystem services and their effectiveness in urban environments. Lauriane employs various geographic tools, including QGIS and Google Maps to analyze maps, satellite images, and field photos to evaluate these urban spaces.

 

Sammy Witchalls

Sammy has an undergraduate degree in Environmental Science from Lancaster University (UK) and is currently a master’s student at the Technical University of Dresden (Germany) where he studies Ecosystem Services with a specialisation in Spatial Development and Natural Resource Management. Presently, he is working on an internship in Vilnius where he is researching various approaches to quantifying and mapping ecosystem services using software such as GIS.

 

 

Alice Ray

Alice is a master’s student at the University of Lille (France) specializing in Evolutionary Biology and holds an undergraduate degree in Organisms and Population Biology from the same university. She is studying the evolution of ecosystems due to climate change and anthropic pressures. She is currently doing a 7-month internship in Vilnius on the management of protected areas and its effects on carbon storage. Under the guidance of Prof. Paulo Pereira, she will use GIS tools and understand the stakeholders involvement in the decision-making process.
