Prof. dr. Ray Smith:

We live in a world that is longing for leadership. But, it is also a world in which the traditional bases of power—reward power, coercion, position power, referent power, and expertise—have eroded, and information power has emerged as an economic and political base of power. The competencies that an executive has—his or her knowledge and skill set—are increasingly valuable in today’s organizations. Expertise is not limited to a person’s place in an organizational chart. It does not depend on how many employees a person supervises, or the size of his or her office. Managers must become leaders. Those who are able to provide excellent leadership will see positive results, and will be in demand because of their competencies. Those who cannot will have to find other methods of earning a livelihood.
