Businessman Elected Council Chairman at First Mykolas Romeris University Council Meeting on December 8th


On December 8th, Mykolas Romeris University's (MRU) first Council meeting took place and Concern "Achema Group" Commercial Director Rimas Varkulevičius was elected Chairman of the 9-member Council. All the members attended and signed pledges promising to uphold University and public interests and to honourably undertake the functions outlined in the Law on Education and Studies.

Lithuania's Education & Science Minister Gintaras Steponavičius, who appointed four of the nine members, also attended the meeting.

MRU is the first University in Lithuania to have a completely new 9-member Council.

After Minister Steponavičius appointed 4 Council members from a list of 21 recommended individuals, the path was cleared to seat the entire Council.

According to the new Law on Education and Studies, half of the Council members are delegated from the university's academic community and the remaining half are appointed by the Education & Science Minister.

One Council member is appointed jointly by Minister Steponavičius after consultation with MRU's Senate.

  • Vytautas Vilys, student delegated by Student Body MRUSA

Members, delegated by Mykolas Romeris University Lecturers and Academics:

  • Algis Dobravolskas, Mykolas Romeris University Economics and Finance Management Faculty, Economics Department Head, Associate Professor
  • Juozas Žilys, Mykolas Romeris University Law Faculty Consitutional Law Department Professor.

Member appointed by Mykolas Romeris University Administration and other Employees:

  • Egidijus Jarašiūnas, Mykolas Romeris University Law Faculty Dean.

Member appointed jointly by the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania with MRU's Senate:

  • Eva Egron-Polak, General Secretary of the International Universities Association (IAU).

Members appointed by the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania:

  • Edmundas Kačkus, Vilnius Municipality Finance Management and Accounting Department Director;
  • Stasys Stačiokas, Judicial Ethics and Discipline Commission Member;
  • Marius Stračkaitis, Notary, Lithuanian Chamber of Notaries President;
  • Rimas Varkulevičius, Concern "Achema Group UAB" Commercial Director & Chairman of the Board of various companies.

As the Law stipulates, MRU's Council will set strategic goals for the University, select the Rector, and maintain ties with the public and founders.

MRU is the first University in Lithuania to have reorganized itself, as required, according to the principles of education and studies. The new Statute of MRU has already been officially approved.

There are plans to launch an international search for a new Rector who will head the University.
