MRU Assoc. Prof. Dumbliauskas On the Influence of Premier Butkevičius

dumbliauskas- Feb. 6th, the daily online news site, www.DELFI.lt, published an article on the influence of Lithuania's Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius.

The article quotes MRU Assoc. Prof. Vytautas Dumbliauskas who says that the prime minister's influence is recognized not only by the public-at-large, but also by constitutional legal scholars and political scientists.

The prime minister also has a majority in Lithuania's parliament, the Seimas.

"Constitutional legal scholars and political scientists acknowledge that Lithuania's Premier, if the Seimas majority is strong and disciplined, is the most powerful government official," Dumbliauskas told the DELFI.lt news site.

According to Dumbliauskas, based on the scheme by French sociologist Maurice Duverger, the power balance depends also on the relationship between the President and the Seimas majority.

However in Lithuania, Dumbliauskas notes that the prime minister truly has an influence on various processes.

Dumbliauskas is an Assoc. Prof. in MRU's Faculty of Politics and Management's Dept. of Political Sciences.
