Conference: Constitutional Principle of Separation of Powers - Oct. 23rd

mrubest Oct. 23rd, 2020, 9:00 a.m., the international conference, "Constitutional Principle of the Separation of Powers" will be held at the Seimas parliament building. It will be possible to view the conference connecting via the "Seimas tiesiogiai" link and also via the You Tube programme, "Atviras Seimas."

Oct. 25th, 2020, marks 27 years since the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania was approved. To mark the anniversary, the international conference will be held Oct. 23rd.

Vilnius University (VU) Assoc. Prof. Haroldas Šinkūnas will make the first presentation, "Relations Between States: Harmonious Cooperation" at 9:30 a.m.

Former Constitutional Court Justice and MRU Law Prof. Toma Birmontienė will follow with a lecture on "Court Independence."

Prof. Birmontienė said the separation of powers constitutional principle is one of the most important features of a democratic state. The legislative, executive and judicial branches are separated and operate independently. However, the fact that their activities are based on equilibrium does not imply competition or hostility between them, but requires their cooperation.

The morning session wiill be moderated by MRU Prof. Agnė Tvaronavičienė and Prof. Vytautas Sinkevičius.

Papers will be presented at the conference by Mykolas Romeris University and Vilnius University (VU) Law School academics, members of the Lithuanian Bar Association, and an European Union Court of Justice judge as well as a Law professor from the U.S,

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference will be held in an empty Seimas auditorium and will be available for viewing online and remotely via the Seimas parliament "Seimas tiesiogiai" link and the You Tube link, "Atviras Seimas."
