The Faculty of Social Informatics is the newest, but a very rapidly expanding faculty at the second largest university in Lithuania. The Faculty was established in 2008 and is part of the continuing modernization strategy of Mykolas Romeris University. The academics of the Faculty are involved in scientific research and study programmes, providing knowledge on the interaction of society and new technologies - including ICT. Study programmes and subjects offered at the Faculty cover the application of new technologies in the area of social-economic sciences, business and the public sector. At the moment, there are more than 600 students in full-time and part-time faculty programmes. Undergraduate students total 254 and post-graduate 351 students. The Faculty of Social Informatics has Bachelor’s Degree programme in Informatics and Master’s Degree programmes in Management and Business Administration, Public administration as well as Law.

The Internet has become one of the key cornerstones of business, education and studies and that provides new links, thus creating an additional synergy effect. The Social Informatics Faculty bases the organization of the study process on the increasingly popular “wisdom of crowds“ idea. Contemporary information technologies allow the use of unending “wisdom of crowds“ resources, which are rapidly changing the life of society. New vehicles, such as “Synnet“ technology, which has been created by the Faculty’s Dean S. Norvaišas, Ph.D., create possibilities for members to present their ideas in the virtual space. For others, it allows anonymous evaluation on a certain scale. This allows to form an objective view of the thinking of a group, or a team, and its values and the hopes that they have. Teamwork organized in the virtual space is a lot more mobile and problems that arise are solved much faster.

Students are taught by, first presenting them with the theoretical fundamentals of a subject and then, working together in anonymous groups, and encouraging them to find the „truth“ for themselves. At the same time, the principle of “wisdom of crowds,“ with the help of Synnet, can assure student knowledge. When applying this technology for study programmes, study quality improves and the learning process doesn’t lose touch with practice. In this way, the whole study process should change because a large part of it could be transferred to a networked environment. The closest future vision of the Social Informatics Faculty encompasses unique joint study programmes, which will be created and implemented by the most progressive world theorists and practical experts. A project can be implemented through virtual networks of excellence. The European Union’s scientists’ cooperation programme (COST, 7BP, EUREKA), provides aid for creation of these networks of excellence.

Brainstorming, the popular creative and decision-making method, has also been transferred to the information technology environment. At this time, a group of experts is being gathered, which will work in a networked environment and present their insights to society on matters of importance. Experts, whose selection will take place using a group regulation mechanism, could be presented an area of study, for example, which would help revive Lithuania’s economy. By way of the “wisdom of crowds“ the summarized expert prognoses and the offered methods of problem-solving would be announced in the press. In the near future, network expert activity should transform to a think tank-type Future Institute, which would rapidly analyze important questions for society-at-large and offer solutions, encourage bringing up progressive ideas and their implementation.

Having gone from laser physics to modeling of phenomenon in society, S. Norvaišas, Ph.D., asserts that societal phenomenon in these times in our complex, multi-layer society, is actually necessary. The modeling of social phenomenon – is one of the most perspective spheres of activity, without which neither politicians, nor businessmen can do without. It is sometimes difficult to forecast complex systems – organizations, markets, etc (and sometimes almost impossible) due to their inherent complexity. In the rapidly changing marketplace, there is a shortage of such specialists, who would not only grasp the information technology needs of companies, but also would be able to follow through on their changes and concrete application possibilities. Mykolas Romeris University’s Social Informatics Faculty prepares information technology specialists, managers, consultants, and system analysts, who are now popular in an ever-changing labour market. They are capable of finding their way in the contemporary sea of IT and apply technologies for human knowledge, for experience and to form generalizations and help organizations to make necessary decisions. In contemporary business, that is of utmost importance because most companies, seeking to optimize expenditures, try to attract resources and services from the outside. One of those services could be consultations when making important decisions, the diagnosis of organizations’ internal climate and “treatment “ or help, preparing for important changes.
