The Department was established February 21st, 2005. At the time it was called The Environmental Safety Department and belonged to the State Management Faculty. On June 10th, 2005, the Faculty was divided into three separate faculties. The Environmental Safety Department was renamed "Department of Environmental Policy and Management" and assigned to the Strategic Management and Policy Faculty.

Two master's degree study programmes and two specializations have been prepared at the department.

Master’s study programme Public administration direction:

Environment Protection Policies and Management
The program deals with issues of environment protection management, environmental policies of certain specific areas (atmosphere, hydrosphere, soil and deposits, etc.) and modern concepts of their state administration policies.

Environment Protection Policies and Management Specialization of Nature Resources Use
This specialization is intended to prepare specialists of environmental protection, having an expertise in nature resources use, policy and management principles of certain fields of environmental protection (territory planning, forestry, agriculture and others). Having completed this specialisation and having passed the courses in the field of nature resources use, graduates will be prepared to be employed by specialised nature resources use management enterprises, as well as in the bodies of public administration, such as county administrations and local municipalities. Employment possibilities will be open for the graduates of the specialization also in other public institutions and private enterprises dealing with natural resources use, environmental protection.

Environment Protection Policies and Management Specialization of Land Management Policy
This specialization is intended to prepare specialists of land management, having an expertise in land restitution policy and administration, aspects of spatial planning and land use as well as having capacities to be involved in public administration with competences covering the land management aspects. Having completed this specialization and having passed the courses in the field of land management policy, graduates will be prepared to be employed by specialised land management and real estate enterprises, as well as in the bodies of public administration, such as county administrations and local municipalities. Employment possibilities will be open for the graduates of the specialization also in other public institutions and private enterprises dealing with land restitution, public land management, land and other natural resources use, environmental protection, agricultural and rural development issues.

Sustainable development management and administration  
The goal of sustainable development is to ensure quality of life by coordinating implementation of economic and social development objectives as well as requirements of environmental protection. It is integrated into United Nations, European Union and national strategic documents. The interdisciplinary master studies are targeted to develop relevant management and administration competences in order to implement sustainable development principles at the national, regional and local level and in the industry.
