International joint PhD programme Law, Science and Technology student from Mexico Daniel Zavoleta Salinas is one of the more than 130 youth leaders from 70 countries attending the annual Transparency International (TI) Summer School on the MRU campus.

A lawyer, Salinas is currently studying in the international PhD programme at the University of Turin, Italy. MRU is one of the six consortium partners implementing the PhD programme.  Previously he was at the University of Bologna, Italy, which is also a PhD consortium partner.

He said he found out about the PhD programme while working on a project regarding Science and Technologies. He was surfing the Internet, when the PhD programme caught his eye.

"I was looking for something else on the Internet and it got my attention," he said.

Salinas plans to complete the PhD programme in 2019.

When not attending lectures, he finds time to explore Vilnius, which he said is a very green city.

The green parks, which are incredibly well taken care of, are unusual. He said in Mexico there are not many open green places, where people can meet.

He found it amazing that people from all walks of life can enjoy and sit in the green parks in the centre of Vilnius.

Salinas also said that the Vilnius industrial travel bar, "Peronas" which is located in the Vilnius railway station on a platform, is also "something very cool and unusual," that he has not seen anywhere else.

It's unique to be able to watch the trains depart before your eyes and have a beer, he said speaking of the "Peronas" bar, popular with youth.

In Vilnius, you have this "coolish attitude - that is the impression I get," said the 35-year-old attorney.

"You like to chill and enjoy life," he said.

Salinas also was amazed to find marigolds planted near the entrance to Mykolas Romeris University.

These are flowers that we plant in Mexico. They are popular during the Day of the Dead ceremonies in November, he said admiring the yellow flowers.

The TI Summer School is held for the 8th time this year at MRU from July 10th-16th, 2017.
